Earth Day – Organic is a Step in the Right Direction
You are going to see the word “extractive” (definition: of or involving extraction, especially the extensive extraction of natural resources without provision for their renewal) in environmental news. One of the reasons we have stayed so focused on organic products is that they come from farming and production methods that improve soil and preserve the purity of water and air. In other words – regenerative!
Those of us in the organic industry are inspected every single year. We are required to account (as in audit style accounting) every pound/kilo/liter of material we buy and sell and they better balance.
The farmers we work with are actively using methods that sequester CO2. They put minerals and organic matter (humus) back into the soil. They improve soil. This helps create cleaner water in the water table. Not using petroleum-based fertilizers contributes to cleaner air. The United Nations reports that conventional farming accounts for about 31% of the pollution on the planet.
In honor of Earth Day, try to avoid “extractive” products:
- Support organic farmers whenever you can. We know it costs more but pollution makes us all less healthy.
- If you have a business, find something you can convert to organic, a single ingredient helps.
- Try to convert your cleaning suppliers to non-petroleum bases ingredients, plant derived chemicals are renewable.
Finally, go outside and appreciate this amazing planet. As Margaret Mead once said - “We don’t have a society if we destroy the environment”.
