The shea tree (vitellaria paradox) is a native, multi-purpose tree species to West Africa. This is an economically important tree to Burkina Faso because it is used not only in cosmetics but food and medicine as well. The Burkinabe women call the shea nut their “green gold” because the harvesting and processing of the ingredient is traditionally a female occupation. The producer we partner with cares about the region and the people. Ensuring the Burkinabe women have the means to harvest and cook the shea nuts sustainably is of importance. They are also a member of the Global Shea Alliance and its sustainability program.
